May Arts Autism Awareness Blog Hop

Research and education have erased many of the misconceptions about autism but it's important to keep the research going and to learn the signs of autism.  For more information, I encourage you to visit  The Autism Research Foundation and Austim Speaks.

The puzzle piece is often used as a symbol for Autism.  I wondered why, so I did a little searching and found this explanation:

"The puzzle represents the ambiguity and mystery around the causes and understanding of Autism. The puzzle piece is often used in graphics for Autism and Autism Treatment.

Many early Autism Awareness campaigns used the slogan

Help Solve the Puzzle (of Autism)”

You also now see the puzzle pieces on the autism ribbons, as a multi-colored puzzle."

The May Arts Autism Awareness Blog Hop is featuring the Puzzle Piece as our inspiration this year You might know, that this is a cause very dear to the heart of the Ribbon Lady.

I traced my cookie cutter onto a piece of lightweight cardboard, covered it with Tombow MonoMulti, then pressed strips of ribbon in the Autism colors onto the shape.  When the glue was dry, I trimmed the ribbons around the puzzle shape.

I made some puzzle piece cookies to go with the theme.

You can see how I made the cookie dough here.  I used my old standby Lemon Sugar Cookie recipe, although any good sugar cookie recipe will work.

Here are the rest of the Ribbonistas on the hop.  Oh and there's a prize for commenting...3 chances to win a roll of your choice of May Arts Ribbon from the blue line!

Great looking cookies. I love that autism is getting more recognition through autism awareness month. My son, who is 11, is autistic. He is one the kindest, sweetest and most innocent children I know. Understanding is so important...I am so tired of hearing people say, "but he looks normal".
